So we came upon something called “filigree” a while back. (filigree-ornamental work of fine (typically gold or silver) wire formed into delicate tracery-wikipedia). Our partner O Cesto Artesanato in Evora PT was selling some jewelry.  (last two photos) We highlighted it as an intricate kind of traditional metal work.  We will now provide some of the meaning.  Also see how this tradition is kept strong.

The Heart of Viana or “Coracao de Viana” is seen as a symbol of honesty and generosity.  It arose in the 18th century.

The handicraft is named after the city of Viana do Castelo  in Northern Portugal but is actually from the Minho region on the border with Spain. It has been offered as lucky charms to brides and the tradition is to pass the jewelry from mother to daughter. You can even see below some art work from students where they had to put Portuguese things within the drawings as they learned about the tradition.
