Mental health: How essential oils work in mental recovery and rebalancing
The cases of people suffering from anxiety symptoms, depressive states, and other mental disorders, have grown a lot in recent years. The pandemic has further aggravated this situation of stress and tension.
In these turbulent days, maintaining mental health is crucial to reducing the risk and incidence of adverse mental states. It can even damage the immune system and make us more susceptible to disease.
Stress causes several reactions in the body that impact immunity. Therefore, it is necessary to find ways for the body to release serotonin and dopamine, bringing back the feeling of well-being and balancing the emotional state.
Aromatherapy, through essential oils, can help restore mental health. This is because the properties of these substances act in a beneficial way, reducing stress and anxiety.
When this therapy is used with a focus on mental health, it can be called Psychological Aromatherapy or Psychoaromatherapy, providing relief and treatment of psychopathologies.
Inhalation is one of the most common ways of using essential oils for therapeutic purposes. It is even the most recommended method when you want to improve emotional issues.
When inhaling an essential oil, the aromatic molecules present in it easily enter the nostrils, dissolve in the nasal mucus and are captured by the olfactory bulb.
From there, they undergo a sequence of chemical reactions that immediately activate some areas of the central nervous system . For example, the limbic system, which brings together a group of nervous structures responsible for emotions and memory.
In general, essential oils have a mechanism of action that encourages the production of some neurotransmitters in the nervous system. In addition to containing substances similar to these neurotransmitters.
There are many studies and research carried out in recent years, which demonstrate that essential oils can act in several neurological pathways, such as:
- Depressive states
Essential oils indicated for the restoration of mental health
There are a multitude of essential oils, each with characteristics and recommendations for use. Below, I list some of the most suitable oils to help improve mental and emotional well-being. However, I would like to stress right now that there are many more options, which are just a sample of what you can use.
a) Melissa oil: Helps to calm and relieve tension and nerves, bringing feelings of relaxation and encouragement. If you are looking for calm and tranquility to organize your thoughts, this is the recommended oil.
b) Lavender Oil: Very well known for its calming and relaxing properties. It contributes to emotional health, promoting self-awareness, while relieving the feeling of tension.
c) Ylang-ylang oil: It is a plant that has a revitalizing aroma that, in addition to calming and improving the mood, stimulates feelings of courage and optimism.
d) Bergamot oil: Some studies show that bergamot may be able to reduce the levels of glucocorticoids in the body, hormones that are responsible for increasing anxiety and stress.
The psychotherapeutic action of essential oils has many benefits. Bearing in mind that, when compared with conventional psychotropic drugs, they have no adverse effects and are presented as less invasive alternatives.
But remember that in order to administer the oils safely, it is important to have guidance and accompaniment from an aromatherapist. Therefore, it is essential that you only buy and use pure essential oils with therapeutic certification.
Try integrating essential oils into your routine, and improve your mental health!
